Day 1: Valladolid - Balankanché - Izamal
(Overnight at Hacienda San José Cholul)
Begin your journey in the morning from your hotel and travel to the historic colonial city of Valladolid. Discover the vibrant main square, shaded arcades, and charming patios that define this colorful city. After a brief tour, continue your trip to the caves of Balankanché, which were discovered only a few decades ago. Here, you will descend into the underworld of Xibalbá, where untouched sacrificial sites used by priests and shamans for secret rituals and worship can be seen.
Next, the journey takes you to Izamal, known as the “City of Three Cultures.” Amidst its yellow colonial buildings, towering pyramids and temple platforms stand as reminders of the last great center of the Itzás and their violent downfall. The main attraction here is the visit to the expansive Franciscan Convent of Saint Anthony of Padua, now a pilgrimage site for the Virgin of Izamal, the patron saint of the Yucatecans.
Transfer to Hacienda San José Cholul. Lovingly restored, this former sisal hacienda shines in the glory of its heyday. Enjoy an overnight stay in a double room with breakfast included. Distance: approximately 250 km.
Day 2: Mérida - Uxmal (Overnight at Hacienda Temozón)
(Overnight at Hacienda Temozón)
After a hearty breakfast, head to Mérida, where you can admire the opulent mansions of the former hacienda owners along Paseo de Montejo. Take a stroll through the historic center to experience the lively atmosphere of the state capital. In the afternoon, continue to the karst hills region and arrive at Uxmal, where the temples rise majestically from the forest.
The awe-inspiring architecture, built by the Mayans over a thousand years ago without modern tools, fills visitors with reverence and admiration. Timeless elegance defines structures such as the Governor’s Palace and the Nunnery Quadrangle, which have inspired modern architects and delighted the gods they were built for.
