Day 1: Valladolid - Cenote Yokdzonot - Izamal

(Overnight at Hacienda San José Cholul)

After breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and the Hacienda tour will begin. The journey heads west towards Valladolid, a charming town we will reach after aproximately two hours. Upon arrival, enjoy a leisurely walk around the vibrant main square, with its shaded arcades, imposing colonial church, and the stately government palace.

Next, we proceed to a typical Maya village where we visit the Cenote Yokdzonot. These unique freshwater sinkholes, formed over hundreds of thousands of years in the vast karst landscape of the Yucatan Peninsula, were created when underground rivers and flooded stalactite caves collapsed, revealing crystal-clear groundwater. Thousands of such cenotes have been discovered and studied over decades. The word "Cenote" is derived from the Mayan language and means "sacred well." Here you'll have the opportunity to take arefreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of this natural spring. Changing rooms and shower facilities are available. We'll pair this refreshing swim with luch at the adjacent Palapa restaurant, where Maya women serve traditional Yucatecan cuisine.

After lunch, the journey continues to Izamal, known as the city of three cultures. Amid the striking yellow colonial buildings, massive pyramids and temple platforms rise above the town, recalling the grandeur of the Itzá civilisation and their violent downfall. The highlight is the Franciscan convent of Saint Anthony of Padua, now a popular pilgrimage site where the patron saint of Yucatán is venerated. In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited Izamal, marking the first visit of a pope to Mexico since the 19th century, and held an important mass in the convent’s atrium.

We then drive to Hacienda San José Cholul, a beautifully restored former sisal hacienda that now gleams with the splendor of its past. This lovingly refurbished estate offers a glimpse into the opulence of its heyday, providing a perfect end to the day’s exploration.

From there, we continue to the lively capital, Mérida, where we’ll take a brief tour of Paseo Montejo, famous for its grand mansions built by former hacienda owners. A short walk around the main square offers views of the cathedral, government palace, and charming shaded courtyards - perfect spots to pause for a coffee.

Next, we head to the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal town of Celestún. Enjoy a 1.5-hour boat ride through the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, where you may encounter vibrant pink flamingos along with pelicans, cormorants, frigate birds, and other rare coastal species. Day 3: Uxmal - Cocoa Museum and Drive to Campeche

(Overnight at Hotel Boutique Casa Don Gustavo)

After an extensive breakfast, we drive for about an hour to the World Heritage site of Uxmal. Timeless elegance and breathtaking architecture testify to the building skills of the Maya engineers. Timeless elegance characterizes structures such as the Governor’s Palace or the Nunnery Quadrangle, which not only inspired modern architects but also delighted the gods for whom they were built. Learn from your tour guide, an expert in the field, about the history of the Tutul Xiu kingdom in the 10th century. After a brief refreshment, we visit the Cocoa Museum. On a tour of the botanical garden, you will learn interesting facts about the origin, cultivation, and significance of cocoa and can sample the original drink prepared with chili.

Next, we drive about two hours to the meticulously restored port city of Campeche, where you will take an evening stroll through the old town and end the day with a margarita. Day 4: Campeche - Edzná - Hacienda Ticum

(Overnight at Hacienda Ticum)

In the morning, we will further explore the World Heritage city of Campeche, renowned for its formidable fortifications that once defended against numerous pirate attacks. After a few foto-stops, we head to the lesser-known yet equally captivating temple city of Edzná. Here, a vast square dominated by a massive acropolis reflects the centuries-long power of this classical Maya center. The site’s well-preserved stone stelae recount the stories of the mighty god-kings who ruled over this ancient dynasty. The Temple of the Five Stories, the tallest structure at Edzná, was used for important astronomical observations.

We then continue our journey through the fertile hinterland of Campeche, passing through typical rural villages on our way to Maní. This historic Maya village is famous for its monastery, where the burning of the codices took place in 1560, as well as for its rich preservation of Maya traditions. In Maní, we will visit a Meliponario, a bee farm dedicated to the native stingless Melipona bees. Here, centuries-old traditions of honey production are upheld, and products made from honey, propolis, and pollen remain central to Maya natural medicine.

Afterward, we proceed to Hacienda Ticum, a beautifully restored former sisal hacienda. This charming retreat invites you to unwind by the large pool, stroll through the expansive gardens, or relax on the terraces.

Day 5: Hacienda and Ruins of Aké - Chichen Itza

(Overnight at Hacienda Chichen and Yaxkin Spa)

Not far from our hotel lies the former Sisal Hacienda San Lorenzo de Aké, situated next to the temple ruins of the Maya city of Aké. In the historic factory buildings, you can observe the traditional process of extracting sisal fibers from agave leaves, a practice that was widespread across Yucatán in the late 19th century. The clattering machines of a bygone era still spin these fibers into twine, ropes, and jute fabrics. If the manager is available, you’ll gain valuable insights into the fascinating history of this place during a guided tour of the old factory, rope mill, and the grand mansion. A short detour to the ruins of Aké allows you to climb a massive temple platform with megalithic columns, offering a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the ancient Maya.

In the afternoon, we travel to Hacienda Chichén, located next to the world-famous temple complex of Chichén Itzá. This historic hacienda once served as a base for the first archaeological excavations, hosting renowned archaeologists of the past century who stayed and conducted research here.

Overnight at Hacienda Chichén & Yaxkin Spa, breakfast included.

Distance covered: approximately 100 km.

Day 6: Chichen Itzá - Transfer to your next hotel at the Riviera Maya

One of the greatest advantages of staying right next to the iconic Maya site of Chichén Itzá is the opportunity to visit this World Heritage site before the large crowds and the heat of the day set in. With over two million visitors annually, Chichén Itzá stands as one of the most famous ancient sites in the world. During your visit, you will explore a breathtaking temple city, primarily dedicated to the feathered serpent deity Kukulkan. As you stroll through the site, you’ll be transported back in time, admiring beautifully carved monuments such as the largest ancient ball court, the Tzompantli Skull Platform, and the renowned Temple of Kukulkan, with its fascinating astronomical significance.

After an in-depth guided tour, we take a short drive to the colonial city of Valladolid, where you can relax and refresh in the shaded courtyard of a local patio restaurant.

Following lunch, we will transfer you to your next hotel along the Riviera Maya or to Cancún International Airport.
