Mayan Night Tour: Experience a Sacred Temazcal Ceremony and Swim in a Cenote
The Temazcal is a traditional steam bath used by ancient Maya cultures and various Mesoamerican peoples. This ritual involves physical cleansing and is also used for spiritual and therapeutic purposes. Symbolically, participants return to the womb of Mother Earth. The ritual is guided by a shaman in the tropical jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula, in a Maya community just south of Playa del Carmen. Being a shaman is not a profession you can learn; it is a tradition passed down through families.
Before the ritual begins, participants and the ceremony master greet all directions, elements, and ancestors. The actual Temazcal (house of hot stones) is a low structure where glowing stones are placed in the center. The ritual, conducted in complete darkness, involves placing selected healing herbs on the hot stones and pouring water over them. Healing chants are accompanied by rattles and drums, and participants join in the singing. Water, fire, earth, air, and the ancestors are invoked and welcomed.
After the ceremony, the shaman blesses everyone and cleanses the body with a smoky herbal bundle. Traditionally, the ritual ends in the crystal-clear, cool water of a cenote. These entrances to the underworld, as called by the Maya, are part of the world's largest underwater system. The refreshing, clear freshwater from the "sacred springs" revitalizes body, mind, and soul.
The experience concludes with a traditional dinner, where refreshing Jamaica tea is a must. Take the opportunity to bake traditional corn tortillas over an open fire with local women.
Afterwards, around 10 PM, everyone is returned to the starting point of the excursion.
