Highlights of Mexico City: Xochimilco and the Dolores Olmedo Museum
Xochimilco – one of the most beautiful districts of Mexico City. The word comes from the Nahuatl language and means "place of the flower fields." Along with the historic city center, Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is home to 14 indigenous groups that have largely preserved their traditional culture. Xochimilco is famous for its **floating gardens**, with canals that are remnants of Lake Xochimilco. These canals have earned the district the nickname "Venice of Mexico." The 150 km of canals are filled with colorful boats called **Trajineras**, which locals and tourists alike enjoy for leisurely rides.
On our English-guided tour, you’ll experience the magic of Mexican folklore with a vibrant and musical boat ride aboard a beautifully decorated Trajinera. Along the way, you can sample Mexican delicacies and enjoy live Mariachi music. As you float down the canals, you’ll also have the chance to see more sights along the water’s edge.
Unfortunately, the **Dolores Olmedo Museum**—which houses the largest private collection of works by Mexico's most famous artistic couple, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera—has been closed since the pandemic and is currently inaccessible. Surprisingly, Frida Kahlo is more well-known in Europe than her husband Diego Rivera, despite his fame as her teacher and mentor and his global recognition at the time of their marriage. The couple had an extraordinary relationship and professional partnership, marked by scandals and affairs.
As a substitute, we will visit the famous **Coyoacán** neighborhood, where you can explore the local market and see where Frida and Diego once lived. Coyoacán is one of the oldest and most beautiful areas of the city, known for its colonial churches, houses, and vibrant market. You’ll get a deep insight into the history and culture of this iconic neighborhood.
