Anthropology Museum in Chapultepec Park: The "Green Lung" and Recreational Area of Mexico City

The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City is one of the most important museums in the world. It houses the largest collection of artifacts from ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. Marvel at the unique pieces displayed in the 24 thematic rooms and learn about the fascinating history of the pre-Hispanic peoples of Mesoamerica.

The museum, located within Chapultepec Park, was planned in 1963 and opened in 1964 after 18 months of construction. It features a central patio with access to 23 exhibition halls. On an exhibition space of an incredible 79,700 square meters, you can explore the rich history of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican civilizations and admire impressive art pieces.

The ground floor offers an exceptional archaeological collection, along with architectural examples that bring Mexico’s indigenous cultures and eras to life—such as one of the most important and well-known artifacts: the Stone of the Sun. In the ethnographic rooms on the upper floor, you’ll find examples of craftsmanship and construction from contemporary indigenous peoples of Mexico, along with their traditional clothing.

In the second part of our tour, we’ll take in all these impressions and enjoy a walk through the majestic Chapultepec Park. The name “Chapultepec” comes from the Nahuatl language and means "hill of the grasshoppers." This large hill is located southwest of the city center. The park, with an area of about 4 km², is the largest green space in the center of Mexico City and serves as the “green lung” and recreational area for the inhabitants of this megacity.

The park is not only home to many species of animals and plants, but it is also filled with landmarks such as a lake, art sculptures, a zoo, museums, and Chapultepec Castle, perched on a hill. The castle’s history is rich—it was initially the residence of the viceroys of New Spain, later a military academy, and in 1864 it was renovated and turned into the residence of Emperor Maximilian. Today, it houses Mexico’s National History Museum.

The hill upon which the castle stands was once a stronghold of the Toltecs. Around 1300, the Aztecs first settled here, although they were driven out by neighboring tribes. They eventually reclaimed the land. At the eastern end of the hill, you can still find a rock wall where Aztec rulers had reliefs carved to immortalize themselves. Unfortunately, much of this artwork was deliberately destroyed during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Only the image of Moctezuma II still shows recognizable remains.

As you can see, history is alive here! Join us for a breathtaking trip into Mexico’s past.
