Mexico City Afternoon Tour through the Historic Center: Tradition, Pubs & Folklore
The tradition of drinking and "Cantinas" dates back to the 19th century. In those days, pubs were only accessible to men, and women were not allowed inside. But today, in the 21st century, things look a little different. The pubs, where many alcoholic beverages are served—sometimes even snacks or delicious meals with daily menus—have long achieved cult status. Nowadays, visiting a Cantina is a must. It doesn't matter if you're a tourist or a local, a lawyer or a construction worker. A Cantina is open to everyone, and many, which have been open since the early 20th century, could tell many stories—if only the walls could talk. In 2008, one of the oldest Cantinas, after nearly 150 years, closed its doors forever.
Let’s visit Cantina La Peninsular, a pub with many stories to tell. You should also visit Cantina Bar Mancera or El Gallo Oro, if you can find a spot inside these iconic taverns.
Also on the itinerary is a visit to a Pulqueria. Pulque is a traditional drink that was made by the Aztecs and was only meant for the priests and human gods. Pulque is the sap extracted from the heart of the agave plant.
The fermented, whitish, and cloudy sap—also known as agave honey water—is practically only available in Mexico and, due to its short shelf life, is difficult to transport. Learn about the fascinating history of Pulquerias during the colonial period.
Next, we head to Plaza Garibaldi, where we’ll visit the local museum to learn about the history, production, and differences between Mezcal and Tequila.
A visit to "Guadalajara de Noche" at a nearby restaurant will treat us to a dance performance of local folklore and Mariachi music. The entrance ticket includes a cocktail or another drink of your choice.
To finish off the night, you can listen to a live performance from a real Mariachi band outdoors at the plaza. The Mariachis gather every night at Garibaldi and offer to play serenades for those in love. The true Mexicans often sing along, and most of them can do it very well, having grown up with this tradition.
